Dust in the Wind

I always knew we lived in a big country but when it takes over a couple of hours, just to fly over Hudson's Bay and it's ice flows at more than 800 km per hour, you start to take on a new perspective as to how vast this country really is. The onscreen flight map tells us we are flying over the eastern extremities of Russia and I hope the navigation skills of the pilot don't sway into an unwanted flight plan with a trigger happy MIG fighter pilot looking for unwanted intruders in a restricted area. It becomes even more apparent, as I can see on the display screen, the deviation of the flight path as we avoid North Korea entirely and a potential international incident, should Kim decide to make a new statement to the world. Rather than being on the sidelines, I now feel  we are taking center stage when it comes to Geo politics, and a potential hot spot in the world, takes on a new sense of reality.

It was a brief stopover in Soeul, before reaching our final destination of Taipei Taiwan, about 24 hours after leaving Montreal. Exhausted, we try to catch up on some sleep, but as my internal clock is in total shock, it is very difficult, and we are up and out of the hotel Saturday morning. Equipped with a complimentary smart phone and unlimited data on a 4G network courtesy of the hotel, the first stop is an ATM and some cash. We hail a cab. and make our way to the holy temple of Long Shan.   People everywhere and the pungent smell of incense burning is overwhelming  as we pay our respects to Buddha and decide a trip to the Botanical Gardens would be a welcome relief. It is a rather dull day but nevertheless the green trees and colorful flowers instill a renewed energy. We make our way to the shopping area of Huashan 1914 Creative Park and some lunch before heading back to the hotel to try and get some shuteye.  We have to be ready for our 05:00 wake up call tomorrow morning when we will meet up with our group. I don't know how to say good night in Chinese so I'll just sign off in Japanese.
