It was to be a busy, busy day. Our trip would take us north through the Rift Valley. Mountains on both sides as we climbed and climbed to what they referred to as the highlands. Tea fields aplenty and of course a visit to a tea plantation was the first order of the day. An Oolong tea and a honey scented black tea were just two of the samplings. I guess for tea afficiendos it makes for an interesting tasting but I'll just stick to my orange pekoe and honey thank you. The view from the top was impressive as we had a 270 degree panorama to take in.
What a great surprise when we had the opportunity to go cycling through some rice paddy fields. Naturally flat terrain, as the water flows gradually from one field to the next, we embarked on an easy pedal on marked roads and trails. Warm breezes, user friendly trails and the calming effect of green rice plants sitting in water made for a great outing. Many observation posts along the way would have made for a great place to stop for a picnic lunch.
Speaking of lunch we stopped at the local fast food restaurant. An encounter of a different kind. Referred to as box lunches, there are all sorts of combinations which all contain rice, a green vegetable, sausage, some kind of tofu thing with a choice of chicken (fried or boiled) or pork. How about two steamies with a french fry? I guess that will have to wait.
The afternoon visits included one to an eco forest and one to a fish farm. Underground water is forced to the surface by natural springs and supply an endless flow of fresh water to hundreds of fish ponds. The particular fish farm we visited specialized in small fresh water clams. It is back breaking and repetitive work, sorting the clams from stones and pebbles. The fish farm also encourages education and a full on approach to enriching children's hands on learning.
